Cannabis Clone Care Guide

Cannabis plants are very sensitive in the early stages of development. Special care is needed to ensure that your cannabis clone(s) grow strong and healthy. Many of the clones available from Vendors on Seed Canary are guaranteed to be pest and disease free, but to ensure you are successful with the plants you choose, here are some tips on how to care for them. Please inspect your clones immediately after receiving them and if you see any issues, please contact us (Seed Canary) or the vendor who you purchased from.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT CANNABIS CLONES

When you purchase a clone from seed canary, it is important to get your clones under the grow light as soon as possible. Cannabis clones you purchase will be photoperiod, meaning that they will not flower unless the light cycle is changed. If clones are not kept in the vegetative grow state long enough this can cause something called pre-flowering.  It is important to keep a close eye on the plants in this early stage of life and to watch for signs of heat stress such as drooping or curling leaves. If they do show signs of stress give them a break and move them back to the shade. It is wise to continue to give supplemental lighting through the dark cycle of the day ensuring they do not receive more than 10 hours of darkness.

Caring For Unrooted Clones

Step 1: Track your package.

As with any Clone order, it’s crucial to know when your box of unrooted cuttings is going to be delivered. While you may not know the exact time they’ll arrive on your doorstep, you should at least need to be aware of the day.

Although these cuttings may not be established yet, they still need to be treated like they are alive. Going on vacation or taking the day off should be saved for another time. If you want to have successful clones, you will need to start caring for these cuttings as soon as they are delivered.

Step 2: Unbox and transfer these cuttings ASAP

Unrooted cuttings need to be transferred as soon as possible to ensure viability. Please place these cuttings in an Auto cloner or cloning tray/dome. In most cases, unrooted cuttings will already arrive inside a rooting cube such as Rockwool or (My Personal Favorite) rapid rooter. However, if they were not then you will need to place your cutting immediately into a rooting hormone. Then, put it directly into a root cube. If using an auto-cloner, put a collar around it and place it in the auto-cloner; you’ll put rooting hormone in the cloner after all cuttings have been transferred.

Step 3: Use the appropriate care for your cuttings. They will need humidity and indirect light until they establish enough roots. Many growers will also use a foliar spray to mist their cuttings to avoid nutrient deficiencies until they are able to be transferred and given nutrients.

Caring For Rooted Clones (Transplanting)

Step 1: prepare the media you are planting the clone into. Some media may require soaking, conditioning, or some other form of preparation. Coco coir blocks, for example, need to be soaked and then broken up. Pre-mixed coco coir substrates are easy to work with and can be forgiving. Popular amendments include organic or synthetic fertilizer and various other substances to improve soil structure.

Tip: Do not use “hot soil” (Soil with a lot of fertilizer) as the roots of newly established clones can be particularly sensitive.

Step 2: fill your pots with your chosen media. Since it is essential that you have a developed rootball before transplanting into a larger pot, We recommend to first transplant into a 1-gallon pot. After a couple weeks your rootball should be well developed, allowing you to transplant her into a large pot/space.

Fill to 1 inch from the tip of pot and gently tamp soil by gently pressing it down with your hand. This helps ensure that air pockets do not develop as these can dry out your roots and will negatively affect the plants health. After tamping, you should have 1 ½ to 2 inches of space between the lip of the pot and the media. This space is important so that you do not overflow the pot while watering (Trust me, It can be a mess).

Pro Tip: Some growers reduce “transplant shock” to their clones by soaking them in a vitamin and hormone solution such as Super Thrive. Super Thrive and similar products contain vitamins and hormones that are reported to minimize stress on growing plants. Prepare a batch by mixing one gallon of water with ¼ teaspoon of concentrate. Soak clones for 15 minutes before you transplant.
